One the nice things that’s happening in Van Nuys is a concerted effort to re-landscape an area that has been blighted by neglect, poverty, drugs and crime on the corner of Kester Ave. and Delano Street. Refering to 6215 Kester Avenue, the modern looking apartment building which is now renting for $1100 for one-bedroom to $1500 for two-bedroom, 28 units with a common area, developed by the Emma Corporation.p1020436.JPG

The facade is no typical historical context that derives from Mediterranean Style like the one next door to the right but intersecting planes given by the functionality of the entrance and two balconies, given it a sense of depth, relief, and scale.

One of things that most commuters deal on a daily basis is confronting traffic to and from work each day in a alarming rate. Spending less time with their family, feeling more isolated and being more stressful.

It use to be that driving meant freedom. Able to let yourself in the endless highway and having the wind blow across your hair, as in Route 66. We all know who were old enough to remember that getting there was more fun than being there at your destination. That was part of the west coast experience.

Now, our driving experience has become less romantic and more a burdensome that has most of us thinking, what has happen and where did the love go? We have become our own worst enemies when we are on the road.

The problem is the increase cost of gasoline, people paying less attention on the road, more cars on the road, some drivers don’t obey the rules of the road and the lack of alternative public transportation.

Most of all, we are dealing with our own world, not having a human to human contact with the other drivers, separated by two tons of metal. The only interaction would be if you were in a accident or you are flipping the bird to someone who has cut in front of you. Oh the Humanity!

At this point, I try to not drive at all but take my bicycle if I need to do some errands or to get somewhere in the Valley. I do encourage more  Angelenos to use the bike more or to pick up bicycling to get around. It’s good for the heart and soul.

Song of the Blog: Hang Me Out to Dry by Cold War Kids from Cops and Robbers

One of the things that irks me is Reality Shows who propose that they are really helping the unfortunate by giving them free gifts like a new house with no mortgage payments, new cars, and a free scholarship for the kids. You know what show I’m talking about? The show that patronize and brings hope to families with flair like a sideshow circus.

The Extreme Makeover: Home Edition has become a paradox for Humanity.

We all know people go thru hardships but should we believe that they are benefiting from the shows generosity or is it the show itself (and ABC) benefiting from advertising revenue? Don’t you think we as an audience care or feel jealous about the families gaining a luxurious lifestyle with all the bells and whistles? Maybe they should do this for all the teachers who wants a customized home because they certainly do earn it.

In the past, there were no Extreme Makeover. People and families who suffered more than us became self efficient and have to learn tools in the key of life. Much of it was to built character and be earnest to themselves.

Most of these new homes are not sustainable, even though some of the appliances are.  For one thing,  why do they need to demolish the old building? What happens to all the waste the clear out? Are they recycle or dump?

The new houses are twice to three times larger than the original home they once live in which means more maintenance and upkeep to the property.  You don’t know what’s gong to happen to those families in the future when they realize that they are paying more for their utilities bills and the house is less efficient by releasing more carbon gases.

I feel this show assaults the audience intelligence and it gains no means of responsibility of helping families. It’s base on Ratings and Corporate Sponsorship.

Song of the Blog: People Ain’t No Good by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds  from the album The Boatman’s Call.

I like the verse:

It ain’t that in their hearts they’re bad
They can comfort you, some even try
They nurse you when you’re ill of health
They bury you when you go and die
It ain’t that in their hearts they’re bad
They’d stick by you if they could
But that’s just bullshit
People just ain’t no good
